The Kind Cut is a charitable organization and social movement which brings professional hairstylists to the streets, homeless shelters, women’s shelters, foster care centers, and hospitals to provide haircuts free of charge.
This is more than just a haircut.
Through kindness, conversation, and collaboration with cities across the world, this project hopes to give a collective face and voice to a group that is too often seen but not heard.
Started by hairstylist Sascha Breuer, The Kind Cut encourages professional stylists to give back to their communities. Cutting across an incredibly diverse array of experiences – men, women, children and entire families who have fallen upon hard times – the faces of The Kind Cut have shown that there is so much more to being homeless than being without a home.
The LA based organization is self-run by Sascha Breuer in his spare-time. Sascha and the many volunteers have already carried out over 4000 haircuts to the streets of Los Angeles, San Diego, Santa Barbara, Pasadena, Eagle Rock, and continue to expand The Kind Cut's reach further afield. There are over 49,000 people currently homeless in the Los Angeles County alone, with over 553,000 currently homeless nationwide, and many more living on extreme low wages (source).
Something as simple as a short back-and-sides, or a neatly trimmed beard, puts a smile on people’s faces, boosts one’s confidence, and in turn, challenges the impulse we all have towards profiling and stereotyping those we meet based on appearance.
Help us put human faces and stories to the statistics.
